We can rewrite the fatherless story through mentoring.

In the United States alone, there are some 25 million youth growing up without a father. This is a personal tragedy and a collective epidemic.  Countless statistics tell us that children from fatherless homes are more likely to: drop out of school, become teenage parents, join gangs and experiment with drugs. The fatherless story is not ending well.

We believe this can change… John Sowers, the president of the Mentoring Project often says, “This generation has been wounded the most in relationships – it is in relationships where the healing must begin.” We believe that mentoring is a way to rewrite the fatherless story. Mentors are the quiet heroes of our community.

Will you be a quiet hero in the life of a young man or boy? They need you…we need you. Help us rewrite the stories for the boys of the Single Parent Support Network and in our city. We will meet once a month on the 3rd Saturday beginning September 19, 2015 from 10-12 with an optional, but highly encouraged to attend, lunch from 12-1 at Grace United Methodist Church, 6316 N. Tulsa, OKC, OK 73112.

Monthly mentoring:

  • for boys 8-18 years old
  • 3rd Saturday of each month
  • 10:00am – 1:00pm (lunch is provided)
  • onsite mentoring only (mentors will stay onsite with your boys)
  • one mentor for each boy/young man
  • commitment required

Mentor requirements:

  1. Show up: unconditional presence is the anchor of the mentoring relationship. Mentees are not usually looking for advice, but for affirmation. We want the mentors to find ways and things to affirm the boys with.
  2. Live out: children aspire to be what they see. We want the boys to see humility, integrity and sincerity.
  3. Speak in: show grace and truth. One way to speak in is to identify gifts and talents.

Sign up is required for this program to attend. Mentors, parents and boys will be required to sign a commitment agreement.
